The Youth Services Book Review Group meets once a month, from 10:00 to 12:00, at the NMRLS office in Danvers. Books from publishers are available to reviewers in advance of their publication date. Reviews are shared each session in round-robin fashion. New reviewers are always welcome! Just come and the books will fall into your hands! Contact Susan Babb) for more information.
**Note: If you review a book first, you get to keep it! Registration is not required!

MSLMA/NMRLS Library Media Specialist Discussion Series

Business Reference Resources

What's on Your Mind? a Paralibrarian Discussion on Recognition

Basic Library Techniques (BLT) - Reference - 2 Day Workshop

10:00 AM to 04:00 PM Stevens Memorial Library, North Andover
This two-session workshop is one of the Basic Library Techniques courses required for state certification of non-MLS directors of Public Libraries serving communities under 10,000.
The two sessions will cover the following: the reference interview; basic reference resources (print and online); children's and YA reference resources; reference policies; referral and supplemental reference services; and future trends and
technologies.
Participants may want to bring a brown bag lunch. We will break for lunch during each session.

Breakfast Brown Bag: Book Discussion Groups

NMRLS area libraries host an assortment of book discussions - in person and online. Some are targeted to family discussion, some for teens, others for senior groups. A number of NMRLS cities/towns have been very successful with "One Book, One Community" programs.
Join us to discuss a variety of ways to generate a buzz about reading in your community. Please bring stories of your programs, PR material that your library used, and questions for your colleagues about how to begin.
Bring a bagel, muffin, or donut to munch on! Coffee and tea will be provided.

When Customers Cross the Line : Harassment in the Library

What happens in a library setting when a patron misunderstands your friendliness across a service desk? Has your helpfulness ever been mistaken for something more? What if a library user harasses a member of your staff? How does one respond in these situations?
Understanding how to identify harassment and what the law says is a proper response are key issues for both staff and library directors.
Attorneys Charles Wagner and Sally Bratten of the Boston law firm of Charles P. Wagner & Associates will provide an overview of these topics and answer your questions.

Population Age Groups: Using Census Information to Plan Library Services

So you may have heard about Napster, did you know that now it's legal!? What about iTunes? What's an iPod? Who am i? " i " hope to answer the first three of these four questions during your lunch. How people, especially young people, buy music is changing drastically! Apple has sold over 100 million songs through its iTunes service this past year! And Microsoft has just entered the arena with their own online music service! All these changes in the music industry will eventually effect how libraries offer music to their patrons, so start thinking ahead! Get in the know and come learn at lunch. No karaoke will be performed!
This session, taught by NMRLS Consultant Scott Kehoe, will be presented in a lecture style so you can sit back, enjoy your lunch, and learn! Your questions and eating your lunch are encouraged, but not simultaneously.
