Spanish Language Outreach Update April 2008

Still Time to Apply for the Diversity Fair Scholarship! WebJunction is
awarding a scholarship for one past workshop participant and one state
trainer from our Spanish Language Outreach Program to design and
present a poster describing their outreach project at the ALA Annual
Conference Office for Literacy and Outreach Diversity Fair
(http://www.ala.org/ala/olos/olosprograms/diversityfair/diversityfair.htm)
in
Anaheim, CA this June. Scholarship applicants will be selected
based on the impact of the outreach activities they have implemented
to Spanish speakers following their participation in the SLO program.
The deadline to submit applications is April 11, 2008. All workshop
participants and trainers are invited to apply for the scholarship.

Join us @ PLA 2008 Traveling to Minneapolis for PLA 2008? Please take

March 25th, featuring the SLO workshop curriculum. Join us for a

coworker that missed the workshop in your local area! Don't miss the

Diversity Fair Scholarship WebJunction is awarding a scholarship for a
past workshop participant and a state trainer from our Spanish
Language Outreach Program to attend the Diversity Fair at the American
Library Association Annual Conference in June. Scholarship applicants
will be selected based on the impact of the outreach activities they
have implemented to Spanish speakers following their participation in
the SLO program. The winners will receive a scholarship to design and
present a poster describing their outreach project at the ALA Annual
Conference Office for Literacy and Outreach Diversity Fair Poster
Session in Anaheim, CA. The deadline to submit applications is April
11, 2008. The winners will have their project featured as a case study
on WebJunction.

Former workshop participants and trainers are invited to apply for the
scholarship.This is a great opportunity to showcase your library's
accomplishments in Spanish outreach as well as help inspire other
librarians interested in creating and sustaining Spanish outreach

Featured Resource: Bienvenidos a la Biblioteca!: A Spanish Pointing
Guide Check out this 60-page English-Spanish Pointing Guide

staff and their customers created by the Beaufort County Library. The
guide presents many typical front-line situations in an easy-to-use
tabular format. Both English-speaking staff and customers who speak

Spanish Speakers Speak Up: Findings From the Latest SLO Focus Groups
WebJunction recently concluded focus groups in a few select libraries
that participated in Round 2 of the Spanish Language Outreach program.
The participants in the focus groups were Spanish-speaking library
patrons. They shared a number of ideas and concerns about using their

Pima County Public Library Engages Teen Parents with Family Literacy
Program The Project LIFT (Literacy Involves Families Together) youth
outreach program empowers youth to utilize diverse cultural strengths
that apply to literacy skill building helping to unifying family
generations as they promote reading with their children and learn

February Webinar: Library Workshops for Spanish Speakers Come learn
about Oklahoma's successful Siga Adelante program

New Wiki for Collection Development of Spanish Materials The new wiki

Ferate-Soto of the Colorado State Library is a supplement for a
workshop she conducted on reaching out to Spanish speakers in the
library. It includes collection development tips for youth and adults,
sample collection development policies, links to external resources
for serving Latinos, and more. WebJunction also provides other

Materials for Spanish-language Readers in Correctional Facilities
Former Spanish Language Outreach trainer Merribeth Advocate has
