Essex National Heritage Commission Grant Project FY2003-2005
The Northeast Massachusetts Digital Library Initiative (Historical Materials)

NMRLS has been approved for three-years of matching funds ($4,166 per year) to provide online access to online resources related to the Essex County history on the Web. NMRLS will offer orientation, training, consulting, assistance, and the necessary technology to repositories of historical and archival records to build the digital library. Repositories are encouraged to digitize materials that are not otherwise available widely.

The ongoing success and growth of the project will require the long term commitment and collaboration of many parties, e.g., NMRLS, repositories, and partner organizations such as:

These organizations, all of which are planning digitization and/or digital library programs on various scales, have been invited to participate on the NMRLS Digital Library Committee. Their participation will be extremely valuable in creating a digital library for the region.

Priority will be given to repositories that elect to work on cooperative projects with other repositories and to projects that address education needs, e.g., Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, and that target specific population areas of interest, e.g., minorities, women, and seniors. We hope to offer a third-party service to record digitized images on microfilm for long-term preservation (at repository's own expense).
