NMRLS Digital Library Grant Opportunity
The Northeast Massachusetts Regional Library System (NMRLS) invites libraries, museums, historical societies and commissions, town clerks, and other institutions that act as repositories of historical materials related to northeast Massachusetts history to participate in the creation of a northeast Massachusetts digital library. This project will build upon the success of our digitization pilot project, please visit http://www.nmrls.org/enha/exhibit/ to view the ECHOES (Essex County Heritage Online Exhibits).
This project will provide free, online access to online resources related to northeast Massachusetts on the Web twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The project is funded in part by a grant from the Essex National Heritage Commission. NMRLS will offer orientation, training, consulting, assistance, and the necessary technology to repositories of historical and archival records to build the digital library. Repositories are encouraged to digitize materials that are not otherwise available widely.
The main thrust of this grant (http://www.nmrls.org/dli/FY03grant.shtml) is to provide access to NMRLS scanning lab and editing facilities along with training and assistance for institutions that lack such resources to create images to include in the Digital Library. For an online application, please visit http://www.nmrls.org/dli/dliapp.shtml or call NMRLS for a printed application: 888-326-7772. However, you are also welcome to apply and participate if your institution would like to participate in this project in other ways. For example: to include links to items that your institution has already digitized; or to attend training sessions to support your own digitization efforts.
While there is no specific deadline to apply for this grant project which will continue until June 2005, we encourage you to apply early to help us implement the Digital Library website soon.
We encourage applications from institutions with collections related to northeast Massachusetts. We reserve the right to provide priority to cooperative projects with other repositories and to projects that address Essex County history and those that address education and other needs, e.g., Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. NMRLS Digital Library Committee will decide on the level of support for any applicant at their discretion.
