Haverhill Public Library was established in 1873 in an
agreement
between E.J.M. Hale and the City of Haverhill. Mr. Hale donated
a
building site and half the money necessary to erect and furnish a
library building and the people of Haverhill donated the other
half.
Last year patrons borrowed 400,000 items, asked 55,000
difficult
reference questions and visited the library 300,000 times during
the 300
days the recently renovated library was open.
The City of Haverhill was established in 1640 as Pentucket
and
incorporated as a city in 1870. Although originally settled as
farm
land, the city evolved into a major industrial center through the
establishment of saw and grist mills in the late 17th Century,
tanneries
and boat yards in the 18th Century and shoe manufacturing.
Currently,
computer technology and research industries thrive within
Haverhill’s
seven industrial parks and newly rehabilitated central business
district.
