The Stephen Phillips Trust House, a Federal-style house
museum located
on historic Chestnut Street in Salem, offers free, guided tours
seasonally
and opens its archives by appointment year-round. The tour focuses on early 20th century life in a grand home:
the
kitchen, pantries and laundry tell of the bustling activities of
the
household staff, while the grand public areas display handsome
furnishings
from five generations of the Phillips family. The carriage house
contains
antique automobiles and horse-drawn vehicles.
The archival collection documents the Phillips family and
relatives at
work and at play from the 18th to the mid-20th century. The
strengths of the
collection include maritime papers, women’s history, household
bills,
calendars and diaries, as well as papers relating to Salem and
Haverhill
history.
