Qualifications: MLS (from an ALA-accredited School) and MBLC certified with
a minimum of three to five years managerial experience
(public library preferred); excellent oral and written
communication skills and strong personnel management skills.

Duties/Description: The Nevins Library is seeking a full time Reference
Librarian/Literacy Coordinator. The ideal candidate for
this position will have a positive customer-service

Library Director, Haverhill Public Library (Posted 5-5-08)
Duties/Description: Supervises Department Heads, Division Heads and Office staff; oversees approximately 25 FTE and 30 volunteers. Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates all aspects of municipal library services in conformity with the policies established by the Library Board of Trustees, the City Charter and bylaws, the regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Supervises directly or through delegation, library services, operation, and activities, including but not limited to: overall collection development, materials selection and weeding; cataloging and other technical service operations; staff development; reference, children's, adult and young adult services, the volunteer program, library building and grounds as well as other services provided to the general public and special user groups.
Works to preserve and enhance the historical and cultural heritage of Haverhill as reflected in the Library's Special Collections.
Works with the Board of Trustees in a formal planning process to develop and execute the Library's Long Range Plan to be reviewed annually, which identifies and addresses community and library needs, provides direction for library development and serves as a base for evaluation of library effectiveness in relation to changing community needs. Makes policy recommendations to the Board of Trustees in accordance with intellectual freedom standards adopted by the American Library Association. Implements and interprets those policies to the staff and public.
Attends all Board meetings and advises the Board in library matters, keeping it informed of relevant issues and developments at the local, regional, state, and national levels.
Responsible for budget management. Prepares and submits to the Board for their approval the two annual operating budgets, a Trustees budget that supports the collection and programs and a Municipal budget that supports the staff and building. Oversees the distribution and expenditure of annual Massachusetts State Aid to Public Libraries. Participates in presentation of Municipal budget to City officials. Oversees other opportunities for financial improvement, such as fund raising and grant writing. Develops and implements a plan to enhance the endowment, which is the library's primary source for the purchase of books and other materials as decreed by the Library Trust as established by the Will of E.J.M. Hale.
Directly or through delegation selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates library personnel, encouraging staff development and professional growth.
Participates in the management of the library's automated network and in regional and statewide library services.
Maintains administrative and operating records; prepares necessary local, State and Federal reports. Closely monitors local, State and Federal laws and regulations applicable to Library operations and takes action to ensure compliance as appropriate.
Exercises cultural leadership in the community and serves as the library's liaison and advocate with municipal government, schools and the community in general. Develops public awareness of library programs and resources available to the public and leads other community outreach programs. Speaks before groups and boards as required.
Actively participates with the Friends of the Haverhill Public Library at the Board level and reports to them monthly.
Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of library science; takes active part in professional conferences and meetings and workshops, reporting to Trustees and fellow staff members. Reads professional literature; plans cooperative efforts with area libraries.
