The Greater Newburyport Adult and Community Education, the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce and the Newburyport Public Library have partnered to offer the first Newburyport Literary Festival on April 28and 29. It will feature panels and readings by noted authors, including young adult writer Lois Lowry, novelists Andre Dubus and Richard Russo, crime writers Tess Gerritsen and Keith Ablow and poet X.J. Kennedy. Financial support for the festival has been provided by three local banks. As a lead-in to the festival, the Newburyport Public Library is sponsoring the "Three Rs at the Newburyport Public Library - Read Richard Russo". Participating readers and/or audio listeners will have an opportunity to then attend two events at the Literary Festival where the award-winning author will be present. The library will be the host facility for the Festival and will showcase the Pow Wow River Poets and XJ Kennedy on the day of the Festival. With the exception of a Friday evening gala all events are free and open to the public. For more information and a preliminary schedule of events, visit www.newburyportliteraryfestival.org.

The Friends of the Winthrop Public Library & Museum have opened a bookstore in the library building called "Bookends." The Friends accept donations and occasional discards from the library to stock their bookstore which keeps nearly 1500 titles, mostly books, some magazines and quite a few encyclopedias. Hard copy for a buck, 25-50 cents for a paperback and discounted prices for the encyclopedia sets. Open for only a few months, this has been a substantial success for the friends. This was a good option to the old-fashioned lawn-book sale.
