Tips for Creating a User Account &
for Obtaining Usage Statistics

Creating a User Account - Libraries and Patrons

Access NetLibrary by one of the following links:

http://www.netlibrary.com (IP authenticated libraries)
http://mblc.state.ma.us/cgi-bin/netlibrary.pl (Cookie/password authenticated libraries)

http://mblc.state.ma.us/cgi-bin/remote.pl?db=netlibrary
When prompted, input your 14-digit public library patron barcode (without spaces)

To the right of the search page, click on "Create a Free Account."

Each user (library/patron) creates an individual username and password. The username must be unique on the NetLibrary database, so you may have to alter it, i.e. if you always use R2D2 and someone else already has it, you may have to change it to R1D1 . NetLibrary also requires an email address. A valid email address is necessary, but if a user is concerned about privacy, it is acceptable to enter a pseudonymous username.

Accessing Your Libraries Usage Statistics - For Member Libraries only

Once you have created your user account, you should contact NMRLS and notify them that you would like to gain access to the NetLibrary Resource Center. The Resource Center can only be accessed after the above procedure for creating a user account is completed.

You should give NMRLS the following information: The name and town of your library, and your user name. Your password will remain confidential. When NetLibrary has extended librarian access to your account, NMRLS will notify you and you will be able to run your own statistics for your library.

Once the above process has been completed, you may access the Library Resource Center by going to http://www.NetLibrary.com/resourcecenter and entering your NetLibrary user name and password.

How to Generate the Statistics You Want

The Popular eBooks report provides statistics on the number of times library owned eBooks have been accessed (you may also use Activity by Title or Activity by Subject to generate these statistics). To find which eBooks your patrons have not accessed, use the Dusty eBooks report. To find those NetLibrary eBooks (eBooks not owned by your library) that patrons have attempted to access, use the Turn-Away Statistics report.

Once you have selected which report you wish to run, the second screen will allow you to specify the time period, collection, etc. There are 4 steps:

1. Select an Activity Interval. You can run reports for one month at a time or any other time period.

2. Select an eBook collection. You select from collections of eBooks you own or from collections you share with others. Just click on the collection(s) for which you wish to view usage in the left side box and then click the "Add" button in-between the two boxes.

3. Select member(s) whose usage you want to view. To view your organizations usage of the collections you select, click on your organization's name in the left side box and then click the "Add" button in-between the two boxes.

4. Click "Submit" and your report will appear shortly.

The column you will be most interested in is on the far left side "Accesses". "Total Accesses" refers to the number of times all the eBooks in the entire list were either browsed or checked out by a user.
