NMRLS October Delivery Survey Results
By Greg Pronevitz
NMRLS members participated in a two-week survey of delivery volume in October. Each library recorded the number of items shipped and the number of bins shipped. A summary of the average of the two weeks follows. The survey may be extrapolated to an annual volume of 2,011,880. This is up by 1.8 percent from the annual total based on the March 2005 survey total of 1,974,544.
Results below are sorted by network and volume. As in past surveys, MVLC libraries' volume is about two-thirds of the total. NOBLE libraries' volume equals about one-third. This has been attributed to several factors. MVLC includes a larger number of public libraries. The population of towns served by MVLC is about 57 percent of NMRLS' total (about 1.2 million). The population age in towns served by MVLC is a bit younger. For example 20 percent of MVLC communities' population is 55 and over while NOBLE communities over-55 population is 25 percent of a smaller population. The younger users may tend to use computers to request items more frequently.
We thank you for tracking your shipments and we thank Lucie Gallagher for compiling the results.
