2006 CE Survey Raffle Results

The NMRLS and the Continuing Education Committee would like to thank everyone who took the time to fill out the 2006 CE Survey. Responses were up from last year with 109 responses. And this year’s survey included a raffle of two slightly-used MP3 players. The two winners were selected at random after Thanksgiving ... and the winners are!

  • Doris Gallant, Librarian, Swampscott High School Library, Swampscott
  • Elaine Pietras, Librarian, Westford Academy Library, Westford

Congratulations to Doris & Elaine! Rock On!

Hold the Date!

Joint NMRLS Area Friends Meeting
January 27, 2007, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Hamilton-Wenham Public Library

Be sure to hold January 27 for NMRLS' third annual joint regional Friends meeting. The topics will be Friends and foundations.

Our special guest will be Peter Pearson of the Friends of the St. Paul (MN) Public Library http://www.thefriends.org/contact_us.htm. Some of you may have heard him speak at the Public Library Association conference in Boston last March -- we've heard great things!

The meeting will take place at Hamilton-Wenham Public Library from 10:00 - 2:00. We will have presentations from MBLC staff and local libraries with experiences in setting up foundations.

All Friends, staff members, and trustees are invited. Register online or RSVP to Mary Behrle mary@nmrls.org with the number of attendees from your library.

Great Winter CE Opportunities!

Distance Education

Can't get out because of short staffing or bad weather? Try an online course from WebJunction. WebJunction provides an extensive range of workshop topics, including computer technologies, library management skills, and advocacy issues. All the workshops are self-paced and have a one-year time-limit for completion.

Recent additions to the WebJunction e-learning series are LE@D courses from the University of North Texas. You'll find classes on many issues that members request: copyright basics, managing difficult patrons, reaching teens, and privacy issues.

Registration is free for NMRLS members. Contact Scott Kehoe scott@nmrls.org for login information.

Conducting Focus Groups
Thursday, January 11, 1:00 - 4:00 PM
NMRLS, Danvers

Does your library need to conduct focus groups as part of a community assessment or long range planning process? Do you want to build your skills in designing and facilitating focus groups so that they can generate as much useful data as possible?

This participatory workshop will address when to conduct focus groups and how they fit with your other community assessment data, designing good focus group questions, facilitation techniques, and effective note taking.

The session will be led by independent consultant Alan Brickman, who worked with NMRLS on its strategic plan, and will include a presentation and discussion, as well as fun and engaging hands-on activities.

NMRLS Inclement Weather Policy

Workshop cancellations due to inclement weather: If the public schools close in the city or town where a workshop is to be held, the workshop will be cancelled. A message will be placed on the NMRLS voicemail system, homepage, and listserv by 7:30 a.m. the morning of the workshop. If a workshop is cancelled before the date it was to be held, NMRLS will make every effort to contact the registered members.
