January 18, 2008, 10:00 -12:00 - Summer Reading Program Orientation
NMRLS, Danvers

Is 2008 going to be your first summer reading program? If so, come to this orientation which will focus on Wild Reads at your library. In this workshop, there will be plenty of discussion on how and what to plan for. Even if 2008 is your second or third summer, this orientation will offer a lot of helpful tips and strategies!

January 22, 2008, 10:00 - 1:00 - Creating Brochures Using Microsoft Publisher
NMRLS, Danvers

Designing and producing professional looking brochures for your library is very easy using Microsoft Publisher. Learn to make informational brochures that will catch your users' attention with clearly written text, colors and artwork, and overall layout. This hands-on workshop will look at creating and editing publications using many of the formatting and tools available in Publisher. This workshop will be taught by Barbara Andrews of Andrews Consulting, Sagamore Beach, MA.

January 23, 2008 - 10:00 - 1:00 - Marketing your Library
NMRLS, Danvers

NMRLS continues its focus on marketing training.

This workshop will cover:

  • The basics of a marketing plan
  • Library marketing and community partnerships
  • Branding that can make your library stand out
  • Finding help online (e.g., ALA and AASL toolkits)
  • Using AASL and MSLA standards to gain support for your library and research (such as the Colorado study which relates the support school libraries receive to the success of the students)
  • Using photos effectively in newspaper coverage.

Geared to public and school libraries but the elements are helpful for libraries of all types. The trainer is Barbara Andrews.

Session Three: Public and School Collaboration - The Homework Bridge
Chelmsford Public Library

Young Adults in Massachusetts. One of the strategies in the joint statement focuses upon interacting and communicating with school/public library counterparts by:

  • Anticipating a program or service need
  • Knowing each other's mission and role
  • Taking initiative for a program or service
  • Respecting and relying on each other's knowledge and expertise
  • Recognizing the importance of interaction
  • Committing to teambuilding

By focusing on homework and assignments, participants in this workshop will share their best practices and strategies. All are encouraged to come with a counterpart, either school or public.

February 7, 2008 - 1:00 -3:00 - ReadsinMa Online Program Training
NMRLS, Danvers

Learn how to use the Evanced software to manage your summer reading program. Explore tips and strategies on how to best use the program!

ReadsinMa is an online reading software program that is available free of charge with grant funding provided by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. ReadsInMa is web-based and enables the library to streamline in-house processes such as registration, reader reviews, statistics and reports. ReadsInMa is ideal for for summer reading programs for all ages.

This workshop is hands on in the computer lab: participants will learn how to set up their own pages with their own specifications.
