Memorial Hall Library, Andover, has launched Book Talk, a new online book discussion group. Book Talk is a community of readers who discuss one book each month on an online message board. Members post answers to discussion questions and share opinions about the books much like a face-to-face group. Members can recommend books, both in print and in audio, and then vote to select the titles for each month. To keep up with the discussions, members can subscribe to different topics and receive emails when new posts are available.
Book Talk's past discussions include the following: Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson, Baker Towers by Jennifer Haigh, Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks, Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood, Dark Tide: the Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919 by Stephen Puleo, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. The titles include both fiction and nonfiction, and the subject interests vary. The group is currently voting on titles for early 2008.
Book Talk was designed for readers who may be unable to attend an in-library book group but would like to talk about great books. Readers everywhere are invited to join Book Talk.
For more information and to join Book Talk go to http://www.mhl.org/booktalk or contact Emily Classon by email at eclasson@mhl.org or by phone at 978-623-8401 Ext. 45.
Sixty-five volunteers from Idearc Media, (home to Superpages.com and publisher of the Verizon Yellow Pages) contributed over 300 hours to the makeover of the Wilmington Memorial Library. In three days, these volunteers painted the Children's Room, the Teen Zone, the Bicentennial Room, the staff room and selected areas on the first floor. Talented artists created murals based on the theme of the historical Baldwin apple. The volunteers also relabeled books and cut out magnets for the pond and water murals in the preschool area.
The Friends of the Library also contributed to the makeover of the Children's Room as well as the Teen Zone. Tables and chairs for the Teen Zone were purchased with funds from LSTA Teens and 'Tweens grant.
