Youth Services Resources on the Web: Planning a Web Site -Planning a web site takes a lot of careful planning. But why recreate the wheel? In this series of workshops, participants will examine "best practices" of virtual library Web sites, organize and design a web site, and create a basic Web site for your library media center or youth services area.

February 26 - Evaluating Web Sites
Participants will examine virtual library sites on the Web and evaluate them based upon the criteria of content, design, and purpose. Participants can note special features for their own web sites.

March 26 - Planning a Web Site
Web Site planning should be a careful and thought out process. In this workshop, participants are going to examine their objectives in creating a Web site as well as organizing and designing the content of their site. Included in the workshop will be Web tool resources which can aid in creating a Web site.

April 17 - Creating a Web Site
Participants in this workshop will be introduced to basic HTML as well as a web editor. Using information from the previous sessions, a basic Web site will be created. Scanning, sizing, and inserting images into a web site will also be demonstrated.

Caldecott / Newbery Awards Announced:
Avi, author of Crispin: The Cross of Lead, and Eric Rohmann, illustrator and author of My Friend Rabbit, are the 2003 winners of the John Newbery and Randolph Caldecott medals, the most prestigious awards in children's literature. http://www.ala.org/pio/media_awards.html

YSS/MLA Annual Spring Program:
The Youth Services Section of the Massachusetts Library Association is pleased to announce our annual spring program, "Emergent Literacy: The Library Connection."

The workshop will be held on Friday, March 14, 2003 from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm at the Nevins Memorial Library in Methuen, MA. Coffee and registration will be from 9:30 am to 10:00 am.

This workshop will be presented in two parts. Dr. Marica Arvanites an early childhood educator and preschool grants coordinator for the Everett Public Schools will lead the presentation with an overview of the pre-reading stages of the emergent reader and explain the importance of a good preschool literacy program.

Pamela Martin-Diaz, manager of the Shawnee Branch, Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, will present the second portion. She will demonstrate key points of an emergent literacy storytime using the PLA/ALSC preschool literacy initiative programming model.

Take advantage of this opportunity to step into the statewide scene with other youth services librarians across the state. NERTCL Spring Workshop:

The New England Round Table of Children's Librarians (NERTCL) is proud to announce its spring workshop on "The Art of the Book." It will be held on Friday, March 21, at the Eric Carle Picture Book Museum in Amherst. To explore the many facets of the making of illustrated books, we have assembled the following distinguished speakers: Vera B. Williams, author and illustrator of many beloved classics, including the Caldecott Honor-winning A Chair for My Mother, and 2001's innovative Amber Was Brave, Essie Was Smart; Carol Goldenberg, formerly art director at Clarion and Houghton Mifflin Books, and designer of 2001's Caldecott Award-winning The Three Pigs; and Will Eisner, for 60 years a pioneer in the field of comics and graphic novels, and author of Comics and Sequential Art. 2003 Arbuthnot Honor Lecture in Massachusetts:
Renowned author and illustrator, Maurice Sendak, will present the 2003 Arbuthnot Honor Lecture in Cambridge on April 5. The Association for Library Service to Children sponsors the May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture each year. Maurice Sendak will give this year's lecture at 1:30 pm at Kresge Auditorium on the campus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This exciting event will be co-hosted by the Cambridge Public Library and Children's Literature New England, Inc. Among the many ways that the City of Cambridge will celebrate the occasion of the lecture are a dance performance and a dramatic performance presented for families in the weeks before the Lecture. On April 5, A Sendak Symposium will be given. Children's Literature New England, Inc will present this morning program. Registration will be required and attendance will be restricted to registrants. The Lecture and the Symposium are free, but both events will require tickets. These will be available after February 15. YSLead Massachusetts Spring 2003 IDYLS Workshops:
by the Youth Services Consultants, Massachusetts Regional Library Systems

The Massachusetts Regional Library Systems, working with librarian graduates of the recent YSLead Massachusetts Institute, are pleased to announce a series of six learning opportunities for staff serving young people to be offered in various locations during the winter and spring of 2003. Titled IDYLS (Introduction to Dynamic Youth Library Services) these programs address individual leadership skills and, taken together, offer training in advocacy for youth, program evaluation, collaboration, and creating a culture of leadership. Programs are free of charge to Regional member librarians. The programs are funded by the Massachusetts Regional Library Systems. YSLead Massachusetts is federally funded with LSTA funds through the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and developed by the Massachusetts Regional Library Systems.
