"Because of Winn-Dixie" Special Screening and Review
By Carol Ann Dumond, LMS, Landmark School, Beverly
Walden Media hosted a private screening and reception at The Ritz for area librarians for the movie, Because of Winn-Dixie. This is based on the novel of the same name, a delightful story, written by Kate DiCamillo, and a Newberry Honor Book.
During these cold New England days, when the chilling wind forces us to rush inside and stay tucked in, the warmth of this story is just what we need. Not only from the setting, but the warmth that comes from companionship and goodness revives our wintry spirits. Just as the brilliant colors of tulips announce the coming of spring, DiCamillo's novel awakens our sense of others and their contributions to our lives. Ten-year-old Opal moves to a small town in Florida with her Dad, a preacher, and latches on to a big, old, brown shaggy-haired dog for her best friend. Summertime presents Opal and the dog, named Winn-Dixie, with long days, days these two fill by discovering the interesting characters of the town, one of whom is the librarian. With the addition of each one of these "local folks," Opal's good intentions expand as things begin to liven up. This book, (and the upcoming movie, due out in mid-February), is a delight, tightly woven through the simple joys of individual expression and virtue.

Every Child Ready to Read @ your libraryŽ
3/28/2005 -- 10:00 AM to 02:00 PM -- NMRLS, Danvers
Current research on early literacy and brain development indicates that it is never too early to prepare children for success as readers. Parents of newborns, toddlers and preschoolers must be informed of their critical role as their children's first teacher.
The Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children have incorporated the latest research into a series of parent and caregiver workshops to provide public libraries with vital tools to help prepare parents for their critical role as their child's first teacher.
These presentations are designed to assist librarians in early literacy information to parents, child-care providers, early childhood educators, children's advocates, and political decision makers.
Librarians attending this workshop will be shown the materials that are available and how to use them. They will explore ways to bring this important information into their communities.
