Help Massachusetts Libraries in April!
The Massachusetts Regional Library Systems and Barnes & Noble have teamed up for a two-day event April 20-21, 2007, sure to please families throughout Massachusetts. The event, Catch the Beat for Your Library at Barnes & Noble, will raise much-needed funding for Summer Reading Programs in Massachusetts libraries. Barnes and Noble will donate a percentage of every sale from every customer who presents a book fair voucher at any Massachusetts Barnes and Noble store on those two days. The collaboration represents a growing trend in libraries to seek out partners to help fund programs that improve the quality of life for residents. Through partnerships with organizations and individuals, libraries and MRLS to continue to discover alternative ways of funding high quality library programs and services statewide.
Local libraries are asked to distribute the book fair vouchers, found on the event website at http://www.cmrls.org/bn, to their patrons during the month of April. As an incentive to libraries, Barnes and Noble has generously offered a $500 gift card to be given to the library whose patrons bring in the most vouchers. Vouchers may be used for purchases of books, CDs, DVDs, café items, toys, and much more (gift cards are not included).
Most stores will be holding special programs during the event, and librarians are invited to participate. Why not try some outreach to a new group? Storytimes, book discussion groups, knitting classes, and craft projects would all be great additions to the event. Stores are setting up appearances by state legislators, authors and illustrators and would welcome librarians who want to present programs. Librarians in towns close to Barnes and Noble stores may be contacted by their local store's manager or Community Relations Manager, but if you're not contacted, feel free to contact the store or Youth Services Consultant Susan Babb susan@nmrls.org to set up a program. Programs will be listed on the website, and in Barnes & Noble's Calendar of Events.
