An Update from the

Trustee Symposium - March 31

The Trustee Symposium, sponsored by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and the Massachusetts Library Trustees Association, will be held at the Holiday Inn in Boxborough on Saturday, March 31 from 10:00am - 3:00pm. Registration is free and a delicious lunch will be served.

The Trustee Symposium, now in its' seventh year, is an opportunity for library trustees to attend educational workshops, learn about the latest trends in public libraries, and to meet fellow trustees from other Massachusetts communities.

This year's Symposium will feature:

  • A program by Beth Gallaway (Metrowest Regional Library System) explaining the importance of popular Internet services such as "MySpace", podcasts, blogs, and wikis.
  • Dr. Em Claire Knowles, Chairman of the MBLC will give an update on the MBLC's three- year statewide public relations and marketing plan.
  • Cindy Schatz, President of the Massachusetts Library Trustees Association, providing an update of the Association's activities.
  • Rob Maier, Director of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, will hold an open discussion with trustees about challenges facing public libraries in the future.
  • Former Commissioner and library trustee, John Arnold, will speak about the perspective of a town Finance Committee member when reviewing a library's budget request.

New Commissioner

Irving H. Zangwill of Fall River was appointed to a two-year term on the nine-member Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners in late December by former Governor Mitt Romney. He replaces Commissioner John Arnold who was first appointed in 1994 and whose terms of service had expired.

A lifelong resident of Fall River, Zangwill was a teacher in the Fall River Public Schools for more than 30 years. He has served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Fall River Public Library since 1996, as well as the President of the Fall River Public Library Foundation since 2000. Among his other library appointments have been the President and Vice-President of the Massachusetts Library Trustees Association, and on the board of the Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Library System. In addition, he has worked with the MBLC on the Massachusetts Public Library Initiative, Trustee Handbook Committee and the State Advisory Council on Libraries.
