Library Spotlight:
McQuade Library, Merrimack College

In fiscal 2006, McQuade Library at Merrimack College received an LSTA LibQual+™ Survey grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. LibQual+ is an academic library assessment tool that combines a web-based survey with staff training in order to help academic libraries assess and improve services and market the library.

During the summer of 2006, library staff reviewed results of the LibQual+ survey. They identified three major user concerns: the lack of modern equipment, quiet space, and space that inspires study and learning.

Since two of these items fell under the "Library As Place" category, staff developed a marketing campaign entitled Meet Me @ McQuade, which highlights the library as a place to conduct research, study, and learn. A committee of library staff members was formed to develop and implement a marketing plan to guide this campaign.

To improve the physical space, the library staff worked on modest physical improvements that included:

  • Defined quiet and group study zones throughout the library
  • Painted walls and retiled floor
  • Rearranged furniture to create comfortable locations
  • Improved signage
  • New Books displays

The Library is in its second semester of Meet Me @ McQuade. Read and see more about how the Library is delivering its message at http://www.noblenet.org/merrimack/meetme.htm.
