Upcoming Library Celebrations and Events - Mark your calendars!

Read Across America on March 2
The tenth annual Read Across America Day will take place on Friday, March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This year also marks the 50th birthday of the publication of The Cat in the Hat. A nationwide readaloud of The Cat in the Hat is being planned at http://www.catinthehat.com. The teacher's guide contains a reproducible birthday card for the Cat in the Hat, and for every card received, Random House Children's Books will donate one book to First Book to provide new books to children from low-income families. Teen Tech Week: March 4-10, 2007
Please join YALSA in celebrating our first ever Teen Tech Week March 4-10, 2007. The purpose of this new initiative is to encourage teens to use libraries' non-print resources for education and recreation, and to help teens recognize that librarians are qualified, trusted professionals in the field of information technology.

Here's what you can do to join the celebration:

  1. Register for Teen Tech Week at http://www.ala.org/teentechweek. Those of you who register will receive incentives from our Promotional Partners Rosen Publishing and Tutor.com.
  2. Visit the Teen Tech Week wiki at http://teentechweek.wikispaces.com to find and share ideas for celebrating the event.
  3. Plan on attending the Teen Tech Week Kick-Off from 10:30 to 12:30 January 21st at the ALA Midwinter Meeting. Meet our partners and sponsors and get ideas from our TTW Taskforce on how to celebrate in your library.
  4. Keep an eye out on the TTW web site for Teen Tech Week podcasts.
  5. Stock up on your Teen Tech Week swag at http://www.alastore.ala.org

NERTCL (New England Roundtable of Teen and Children's Librarians) invites you to "Leave 'em Laughing: Humor in Children's and YA Literature" on Friday, March 23, 2007 at Worcester State College. Enjoy a great day exploring this very popular genre! Speakers include: Registration deadline is March 12th - hurry!

Jarrett J. Krosoczka
Author/illustrator of the award-winning Punk Farm, My Buddy Slug, and Giddy up, Cowgirl, among others, will share his cutting edge humor so evident in his work as well as on his website http://www.studiojjk.com. Jarrett is now looking forward to the Fall 2007 release of Punk Farm on Tour and his upcoming series of graphic novels.

Gail Gauthier

Talent + Dedication + Kids = Youth Services Paralibrarians

Take one part Talent and one part Dedication, add in a group of kids and what do you get? Youth Services Paralibrarians! Come join your youth services paralibrarian colleagues for an exciting morning of discussion, brainstorming and networking. Share your great ideas, biggest challenges and best moments with others in similar library settings, while gaining "best practices" and support from other paralibrarians. You will come away from this workshop energized, inspired, and ready to take action using a written checklist you'll develop that morning.

Information about the Massachusetts Library Association PARA program will be available. Youth Services Consultants (and former paralibrarians) Susan Babb of NMRLS and Maureen Ambrosino of CMRLS will facilitate the discussion.
