Help came from an unexpected source for The Homework Center at the Shute Memorial Library and the Chess Program at the Parlin Memorial Library, Everett. Both programs were in funding trouble for the upcoming year when the trade union workers of the New Mystic Power Plant donated their April Safety Award to the Libraries. The Award was received from the Washington Group International, Raytheon and Exelon when workers met safety goals for the month. The Safety Committee decided to forgo the gifts usually purchased with the funds to support a local project and selected two of Everett's library programs. Library Director, Deborah Abraham, received a check for $12,000, presented on the top floor of the power plant, overlooking huge new generators.
Michael Lally is the new Executive Director of the Whistler House Museum in Lowell.
North Reading is participating in the "one-town, one book" project this summer and fall. North Reading Reads 2003 has chosen Travels with Charley, In Search of America by John Steinbeck. This town-wide book discussion program is jointly sponsored by the Flint Memorial Library and the North Reading High School Library.
The goals of the program are to:
- Promote reading across all age groups.
- Promote use of the Flint Memorial Library and the North Reading Public School Libraries.
- Promote community discussion by sharing responses to one book.
- Provide a new area of discussion for old and new friends.
Community response has been very positive. We are excited about this venture. For more information, visit http://www.flintmemoriallibrary.org/northreadingreads.htm
