Executive Board Summary, June 17, 2004, at NMRLS, Danvers

Giselle Stevens Appointed to Fill Executive Board Vacancy: The Board Development Committee recommended that Giselle Stevens (Shore County Day School, Beverly) fill the school library vacancy on the Executive Board. The Board moved to appoint her to a term ending November 2004.

Slate of Candidates for Annual Meeting: Greg Pronevitz informed the group that Nancy George (Salem State College) had graciously volunteered to be our next Vice-President/President-elect. This entails serving a three-year term - one year as Vice President, one year as President, and one year as Past President - term ending November 2007. Greg also announced that Jeff Klapes (Beebe Memorial Library, Wakefield) had agreed to serve a two-year term, ending November 2006, as a public library representative.

Member Satisfaction Surveys: Greg Pronevitz provided an overview of the three surveys NMRLS administered in the spring of 2004 - a Member Satisfaction Survey, Database Survey, and a Director's Survey. www.nmrls.org/news/jun04/survey.shtml. He stated that the Director's survey did not yield any responses from school and special library representatives. The group expressed that this was likely due to the fact that, often, school and special librarians do not view themselves as "Directors." The survey will be re-released in the fall to this audience with the subject, "Head Librarian," instead.

Overall, the results of the survey were positive. Those areas where members expressed disappointment will be addressed. NMRLS staff will be contacting respondents (where names were provided) in order to gain an understanding of said problems in order to improve services.

Strategic Planning: The NMRLS Board Development Committee is beginning a process to write NMRLS' second strategic plan. The goal is to prepare a planning document (2006-2010) for recommendation to the NMRLS Board that includes mission, strategic goals and objectives, and a review and update process. A planning steering committee will be formed. A few Board members volunteered and several nominations were made and will be followed up by the Board Development Committee.

FY2003 Value of Service: Greg thanked NMRLS staff for their help in compiling statistics for the FY2003 Value of Service report. Susan Grabski provided Board members with a customized report on the value of services provided to their respective libraries by NMRLS in our last fiscal year (July 1, 2002 - June 30, 2003). Despite a 24% reduction in our FY2003 budget, the total value of service for all NMRLS libraries was over $11 million, i.e., over $7.50 for every dollar spent. Reports will be provided to all NMRLS members over the next several weeks.
