What to do?

Before you do anything, check with your systems administrator, or whoever is in charge of maintenance and upgrades for your library's computers. Security measures may already be in place that you are not aware of.

Things to consider:

Upgrade to Windows XP for computers running Windows 98. Inexpensive site licenses for Windows XP are available via the Massachusetts state agency contract with ASAP Software, for details go to: www.asap.com/government_state_details_1077992686125.html

If using Windows XP, check settings for Windows Security Center on each computer. Be sure Firewall and Automatic Updates are turned on.

To open Windows (XP) Security Center: (These instructions are online at: www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_wscintro.mspx)

  1. Click on Start button (lower left), then choose or click on Control Panel.
  2. Click or double-click Security Center.

Security Center will list your status for:

-firewall
-antivirus program
-Automatic (Windows) Updates

Turn on the settings for Firewall & Automatic updates; be sure your antivirus program is up-to-date.
