Assistant Directors' Forum
At the last NMRLS Assistant Directors' Forum (held May 5, at Lucius Beebe Memorial Library, Wakefield) the group discussed the idea of putting together an exchange day for staff. The basic idea is that interested reference, circulation and youth room staff from one library would spend a day with their peers in another library. The objectives of this program would be to provide:
- A chance for staff to see how other libraries accomplish their work,
- An opportunity to identify new ideas that can be taken back to the "home" library, and
- The opportunity to network with peers - something we all certainly enjoy!
Thank you to Liz Doucett for initiating this exchange and for her hospitality on May 5.
Watch for more information. If you are interested, contact Liz Doucett doucett@noblenet.org at Beebe Library.
Calling all NMRLS NextGens!
"No matter our age or year of graduation, we're all members of an evolving profession that needs the input of all its members to thrive. If NextGens are driven away by lack of job opportunities and advancement, or lack of interest in their ideas and input, then who will lead our institutions and organizations in ten years? In 20?" -Rachel Singer Gordon in her article "What We Really Want" (appearing in Library Journal).
Are you a young librarian and have you been in the profession for less than five years? Are you interested in discussing issues affecting next-generation librarians?
NMRLS libraries are starting a NextGen Librarian forum. We will discuss initiating change at our institutions, working with generational differences, and building on the strengths and experiences of our colleagues.
In the article "What We Really Want," Rachel Singer Gordon writes, "NextGens want the same things any librarian looks for-respect for our commitment to the profession, a chance to contribute to and transform that profession, and jobs with sustainable salaries and working environments."
We will discuss these ideas and more, as we open the channels of communication between NextGens at different NMRLS institutions.
