Improve Your Work!

There are still available spaces in Pat Sordill's Time Management and Effective Delegation workshops on April 15.

We need to give Pat two weeks notice if registration is too low to run these sessions, so remember to register well in advance if you plan to attend!

Workshops of Interest to Staff in Technical Services and Special Collections!

Basic Book Repair
March 25, 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM, Tewksbury Public Library

This hands-on workshop is for staff and volunteers in technical services departments who are responsible for mending books. It will cover the basic techniques of book repair: materials needed, the structure of a book, hinge tightening, page repair with archival tape, page repair with Japanese tissue, tipping in a page directly, tipping in a page with a hinge, corner strengthening, and re-backing a book by replacing the spine cover. The workshop is taught by Gregor Trinkaus-Randall, Preservation Specialist, Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. There will be a half-hour break for lunch. Please pack a brown bag.

Essential Cataloging for Local History & Genealogy
April 8, 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM, NMRLS

Local history and genealogy collections are special. Even though the cataloging rules are the same as for a library's regular collection, there are additional considerations. The organization of the material and the classification scheme need to be re-evaluated in light of the unique needs of the customers using this collection as well as additional notes that a cataloger might not usually encounter.

For copy catalogers and new catalogers who work with local history and genealogy collections at public and special libraries. The trainer is Dodie Gaudet, Bibliographic and Technical Services Consultant, Central Massachusetts Regional Library System.

Archives Alive! Promoting Your Archival Collections
Massachusetts Historical Records Council - Spring 2008 Archives Alive! Workshops

Description:
Historical records and archival collections offer our clearest insight into the past. If thoughtfully promoted, these collections also offer an opportunity for repositories of these records to develop new audiences. In this two-part morning program, participants will learn "How to Get Your House in Order" before you promote your collections from Archives Consultant Laura Lowell, and then "How to Promote Your Collections" from Bonnie Hurd Smith, Public Relations Consultant, who will use her work for the Ipswich Historical Society as a case study in crafting an overall public message and developing a public relations plan to promote archival collections. Workshop attendees are encouraged to bring their project and program ideas to share, as the morning will conclude with a question-and-answer period.
