There's No Place Like Gnome - Introduction to the Massachusetts Library Gnome Project Welcome a gnome into your library and then send him traveling to libraries statewide!

In fitting with this year's Massachusetts Regional Library System's Summer Reading Program theme Going places @ your libraryŽ, you are invited to welcome a gnome into your library, then send him traveling to libraries statewide! Already a sizable list of participating libraries is being formed. The gnomes project (a take off of Flat Stanley) debuted at recent WMRLS Summer Reading Program Power Breakfast on Mayl 13. Catch updates at www.wmrls.org/sum/indexgnomes.html. A library gnome blog is now available!

There is still plenty of time to join the fun! Send a gnome off to other libraries in the state via the library delivery bin. Why gnomes? Gnomes have been around for centuries. Gnomes have always been considered to be more then decorations. They are enjoyed for their charm and whimsy. It is good luck to place a Gnome in the home, garden, and library. Gnomes are well known travelers, what were once mere lawn ornaments are now turning up in the most unlikely places. Gnomes have the ability to ignite wanderlust in all of us. They are also content enjoying the lazy days of summer, reading a book at the beach or in the backyard and that's what this year's theme is all about!

Gnomes have already been sighted! Check the sightings out at archive.wmrls.org/sum/gnomes/

A Gnome Activity sheet has been posted at archive.wmrls.org/gnomes/woburn/woburngnomepattern.pdf.

Join the Major Leagues @ your libraryŽ - www.ala.org/@yourlibrary/jointhemajorleagues

"Join the Major Leagues @ your library" celebrates and promotes two of America's oldest institutions -- baseball and libraries -- while heightening awareness of 21st century literacy skills: the use of computers and other media to obtain information and improve communications. Program runs Mayl 15-September 9, 2005. To help librarians promote the program, ALA has prepared a toolkit with sample press materials and programming ideas, program logos, bookmarks, posters and mascot artwork.
