Summer Reading Program Updates:

Summer 2004
Summer 2004 Reading in the Northeast was incredibly successful! The almost final numbers for the region has a total of 29,922 participants in the program! Last year it was 25,456! The Statewide figure is up as well, from 106,477 to 114,754. This proves that people rely on their libraries for information, recreation, and relaxation!

Summer 2005
Orders for materials for 2005 have been received and compiled. Through a bid process, a printer will be chosen by November. Libraries will have their materials by March 2005!

Upcoming Youth Services Workshops

Programming for Tomorrow's World
10/18/2004 -- 11:00 AM to 01:30 PM -- Governor Dummer Academy, Byfield

A Youth Services workshop to help colleagues both in public and school libraries with programs and services in light of grim budgets. This workshop will include:
*Programming in the Library
*Non-traditional programming
*Resource and Information sharing
Presenters are: Kate Belczyck, Children's Librarian, Memorial Hall Library, Andover; Jennifer Brown, Reference Librarian, Governor Dummer Academy, Byfield; and Beth Gallaway, Youth Services Consultant, Metrowest Region.

Participants should bring a brown bag lunch; beverages and dessert will be provided.

Session Two: Strategic Planning
Long range planning for library service is a sound strategy. Since the release in 1998 by the MBLC of a School Library Media Center long-range Planning Process, more and more schools have engaged in long range planning. Whether you have already completed a plan or are thinking about creating a plan, come discuss what's involved and what works in planning and put it at the top of your list of things to do!

Please note: Ten (10) PDPs will be awarded if 5 of the 6 Sessions are attended. The DOE has approved this series.

Youth Services Brown Bag Lunch: Internet Sites You Should Know!

Pack your lunch and your favorite web sites for this workshop! Be prepared to share and demonstrate up to 5 of your favorite web sites with your colleagues. Reference, collection development, programming, whatever you find most critical and useful to your work!

Susan Babb, Consultant, will facilitate the discussion and create a follow up handout of the best sites.

The Youth Services Book Review Group meets once a month, from 10:00 to 12:00, at the NMRLS office in Danvers. Books from publishers are available to reviewers in advance of their publication date. Reviews are shared each session in round-robin fashion. New reviewers are always welcome! Just come and the books will fall into your hands! Registration is not required.
