Sawyer Free Library, Gloucester: "Fiddling for Libraries"
By Carol Gray, Assistant Director
Twelve year old Nancy Frye loves Gloucester's Sawyer Free Library, loves to read and loves to play her violin before an audience. At Gloucester's Annual Sidewalk Bazaar this year, Nancy acted on behalf of her heart's desires. On a hot Saturday afternoon this August, Nancy had a sidewalk seat, violin case open at her feet and a sign: "Donations for the Sawyer Free Library." Nancy played her violin for passers-by and in less than two hours she collected $27.10. The following week, Nancy, along with her mother Hilary and brother Jay came to the library to present Assistant Director Carol Gray and Assistant Children's Librarian Christy Rosso with her donations to the library.
Nancy has been visiting the Library regularly since she moved to Gloucester when she was four years old. She especially loved the Pajama Time and the regular storyhours and crafts. Nancy quite proudly states that she still has her very first library card that she received from the Southern Pines Library in North Carolina when she was three years old.
Nancy will be in the seventh grade this fall at St. Ann's School and has been playing the violin for seven years. Reading is still her favorite pastime, especially books about animals, fantasy, and mystical adventures. Her favorite books: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Cornelia Funke's Inkheart.

The Newburyport Public Library's 150th Anniversary celebration will be held on Sunday afternoon, September 19, beginning at 1PM. The Newburyport Public Library, one of the first ten public libraries in Massachusetts to be supported by public tax dollars, was established in 1854 with a 5000-item donation from the personal book and manuscript collection of Newburyport native, Josiah Little, and, as you know, has grown to become a full and contributing member of the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium. Events at the afternoon's festivity will include: a special family program; a silent auction of 40 rare books; display and placement of the anniversary time capsule; and, of course, a happy birthday cake! Please call the library at 978 465-4428 for further details of this special day's events.
