Encouraged by the success of the "Understanding Islam" program a few years ago, the Boxford Town Library applied this year to the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities to host their new reading and discussion program called "Understanding the Modern Middle East". Boxford was one of the twelve libraries in Massachusetts selected by the MFH for the program and because of the close proximity to Ipswich, the event will be co-hosted by the Boxford Town Library and the Ipswich Public Library.

The four-part program, which will be held at the Ipswich Public Library, was developed by the MFH and will be free of charge. The sessions will begin on Thursday, September 15th, and continue on September 22nd, September 29th and October 6th, running from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Using a blend of presentation and discussion, each session of the program will focus on a different topic offered by local scholars using the background text, Between Memory and Desire: The Middle East in a Troubled Age by R. Stephen Humphreys. Presentation topics include but are not limited to: women in public life, the reorganizing of the Middle East after World War I, the concept of jihad, the tradition of military dictatorship, and the history of US relations with the Middle East.

A limited number of Humphreys' book will be lent to participants for the duration of the program. For more information, contact Laura Zalewski, Boxford Town Library, at 978-887-7323 or Victor Dyer, Ipswich Public Library at 978-356-6648.
