MLA/MFOL/ MLTA Updates

MLA Children's Services Section:

The Children's Standards that many of our members have been working for are printed and one copy will be distributed to public libraries.

MLA wants to especially thank Walden Media http://www.walden.com/walden/index.php for their generous donation towards the printing of the booklet! It looks great.

If you need additional copies, you can download it at http://www.masslib.org/yss/ServicesToChildrenFinal2007.pdf

MLTA / MFOL Joint Conference:

The Massachusetts Library Trustee Association, in coordination with the Massachusetts Friends of Libraries, would like to announce the date and workshops for their annual joint conference, and invite all interested library directors, friends and trustees to attend. The conference will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at the Marlborough Courtyard Marriott. Conference registration materials will be distributed to all Massachusetts libraries via the delivery system in September, and will also be available online at http://www.masslib.org/mlta/ by late August or early September.

In addition to the six workshops (described below), central Massachusetts' own Judith Jaeger, whose first novel, The Secret Thief, was recently published, will be featured as the luncheon speaker. The six workshops, which cover a wide variety of topics, will be of interest to both new and experienced library staff and advocates.

  • Those new to their positions will benefit from listening to Regional Administrators John Ramsay, of the Western Region, and Greg Pronevitz, Northeast Region, who will present and answer attendee's questions on "What are the Regions? And what can they do for me?"
  • Keeping the momentum going can be difficult for libraries once they've completed their renovation or new building. After all, the need for money and support doesn't entirely vanish after the ribbon cutting. Paula Polk of the Morse Institute Library, and Kerry Remington, of the Rutland Free Public Library, address this topic.
  • Janice Lanou of Orange has done research into the origins of various trust funds at her library. She'll present her methods and talk about how knowledge of past donors can affect future gift giving.
  • Decertification can have a dramatic effect on a community. Dianne Carty, Head of State Aid and Data Coordination, MBLC, Mary Rose Quinn, former Director of the Saugus Public Library, and Patty Ehlers, President of the Friends of the Hampden Free Public Library, will be the speakers at this timely and sensitive workshop.
  • How the library provides outreach to the community is critical, especially to minorities and other underserved populations. Shelley Quezada, Consultant to the Underserved, MBLC, has agreed to be the speaker for this program.
  • New technologies in libraries - what are they and how can you keep abreast? Listen to Rick Levine, Technical Specialist, Central Mass Regional Library System, and get up-to-date.
