NEW! Readers' Advisory (RA) Roundtable
September 23, 9:45 - 12:00
NMRLS, Danvers

Want the opportunity to increase circulation and provide better public service? Curious about what makes a Romance reader or a Science Fiction fan devour their favorite authors? If you are frustrated at your inability to provide Readers' Advisory to people who read books that you do not, have you considered participating in a genre study?

Become a charter member of this Readers' Advisory (RA) Round Table! The NMRLS RA Round Table plans to introduce genre study over the next year based on some of the methods used by the Adult Reading Round Table (ARRT) in Illinois <http://www.aartreads.org>.

Instead of immersing ourselves in an entire genre, we are proposing we do a series of mini-studies. Meeting every other month, we shall all read from one genre, and then discuss the appeal of that genre with each other, emphasizing the building of a skill set of appeal categories and familiarity of genre particulars.

We shall cover a different genre every meeting, allowing each of us to be introduced to the discipline of reading for appeal, as well as an introduction to broad genre categories including Fantasy, Historical, Literary, Mystery, Nonfiction, Romance, Science Fiction, and Women's Fiction. Everyone participating will be able to share analyses to titles and authors in unfamiliar genres that will stretch their capacity as Readers' Advisors.

At this first meeting, we'll plan the agenda and discuss the captivating world of Readers' Advisory possibilities. Yes, there will be homework! But we also guarantee laughter and learning on this journey as we define the readers' experience for each other.

Facilitators are Leane Ellis (Beebe Library, Wakefield) and Nanci Milone Hill (Nevins Library, Methuen).

Coffee and bagels at 9:45. Discussion begins at 10:00.
