The American Library Association and Scholastic Library Publishing announce the 2009 National Library Week Grant. An award of $3,000 will be awarded to a single library for the best public awareness campaign incorporating the 2009 National Library Week theme, "Worlds connect @ your libraryŽ."

The application deadline is October 17. National Library Week is April 12-18, 2009.

For Schools

The National Gardening Association awards Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs that promote learning, environmental responsibility, nutrition, and/or entrepreneurship.

For Schools in Essex County

The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation seeks to facilitate improvement in the academic outcomes of economically disadvantaged youth from birth through grade 8 in ways that lead to academic success and enhanced opportunities later in life. Of particular interest to the Foundation is the enhancement of student literacy skills.

The 2008 School-Based Library Mini-Grant initiative provides funds to schools and school districts to purchase books for school or classroom libraries for use by students ages 5-13.

Grant requests of up to $15,000 per school district will be considered, and up to $2,500 per private or charter school or organization operating a school.

For Public and School Libraries

Public libraries and public, private, parochial, charter, and home school groups (K-12) are eligible to receive Picturing America materials, which include:

* Forty large, high-quality color reproductions of the selected masterpieces (24" x 36")
* A comprehensive teacher's resource book providing a wide range of ideas and background information to support educators using the works of art in core subject areas
* Lesson plans and additional resources available through the Picturing America Web site, PicturingAmerica.neh.gov

For Museums of Any Size

Museums for America is IMLS' largest grant program for museums, supporting projects and ongoing activities that build museums' capacity to serve their communities.

Museums for America grants strengthen a museum's ability to serve the public more effectively by supporting high-priority activities that advance the institution's mission and strategic goals. Museums for America grants are designed to be flexible: funds can be used for a wide variety of projects, including: ongoing museum work, research and other behind-the-scenes activities, planning, new programs, purchase of equipment or services, and activities that will support the efforts of museums to upgrade and integrate new technologies.
