Littleton Cheesecake Baking Contest:

Thirty-five cheesecake tasters celebrated the last days of summer at the Reuben Hoar Library. A beautiful fruit-covered cheesecake was judged to have the best presentation. The Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake won first place and a Banana Cheesecake placed second. The Chai Cheesecake with Gingersnap Crust took third place. We only had 5 cheesecake bakers, but we had lots of fun and recommend it to anyone as a very easy program. Everyone who attended voted for first, second, and third prizes and for best presentation. Prize ribbons from a party store were 99 cents each. An eight ounce package of cream cheese was awarded to the baker of the best presentation cake. Color paper for ballots, plates, forks, napkins and small bottles of water for cleansing palates were the only other costs. We already had the pickle jars used as ballot boxes. Paper bags would also work….maybe even better. We've had a display of dessert cookbooks with cheesecake recipes for the last month which have circulated well.

IMLS Connecting to Collections Grant

The Reuben Hoar Library, Littleton, has received a bookshelf, a collection of books designed to help small to mid-sized museums and libraries in caring for their collections, from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Funding, organizing, and selection assistance was provided to IMLS by the Getty Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation, Heritage Preservation and the American Association for State and Local History. The titles, which will circulate through the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium and the Massachusetts Virtual Catalog, include: "Capitalize on Collections Care". "The Care of Prints and Drawings", "Caring for American Indian Objects: A Practical and Cultural Guide", "Caring for Your Family Treasures", "Field Guide to Emergency Response", "Framework for Preservation of Museum Collections", "International Review of African American Art", "A Legal Primer on Managing Museum Collections, Second Edition", Museum Handbook, Part 1: Museum Collections", "The National Trust Manual of Housekeeping", "The Nature of Conservation: A Race Against Time", "Photographs: Archival Care and Management", "Preservation Management for Libraries, Archives and Museums", and "Promoting Preservation Awareness in Libraries". We look forward to sharing this resource with libraries, archives and museums in the Commonwealth. Just request them.

Reading Public Library Calls in Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard!
By Kathleen Miksis, Reference Librarian, Reading Public Library

Reading Public Library's Laugh Your Head Off, adult summer reading program hit a high note in July with…Stoogeapalooza! This was a night for Three Stooges fans of all ages. And of course, Boomers were especially encouraged to attend. (Not that they need any encouragement when it comes to The Three Stooges!)

Like-minded Stooge fans converged upon the Reading Library for film shorts, a trivia contest and a spirited Stooge sing-a-long. The evening was capped off with the presentation of the coveted "Nyuk-Nyuk Award" and a rousing rendition of The Curly Shuffle, led by The Three Stooges of RPL - Nancy Aberman (Moe), Kathy Miksis (Larry) and Jamie Penney (Curly).

Leonard Maltin once said, "The world is full of two kinds of people - those who laugh at The Three Stooges and those who wonder what they are laughing at." We soitenly found that Reading has its share of Stooge fans and we had a blast bringing them together.
