Scanner Station
This workstation consists
of a planetary grayscale scanner (Minolta PS7000) and a PC.
A planetary scanner has they scanning elements in an overhead unit that
does not come in contact with the item being digitized.
The scanning takes place at an extremely fast rate and is similar to a
camera flash. The Minolta PS7000
controls can be operated at the PC using the mouse, or by buttons or
foot-pedals on the scanner itself.
This scanner has a built-in cradle to
accommodate a book’s spine and can scan left and right pages individually or
single items up to 17 by 24 inches. One
of the most useful features of the Minolta PS7000 is its ability to compensate
for the curvature of a book’s spine or undulations in flat work.
It essentially flattens the image.
This is extremely useful when scanning fragile maps or photographs
mounted on warped backing boards as there is no need to place a sheet of glass
on the image to flatten it out, the scanner takes care of this digitally!
The
Minolta PS7000 is only able to scan items as black and white text or 8-bit
grayscale. Grayscale is visually
similar to a black & white photograph.
The Minolta PS7000 does not scan items in color.
This workstation is used as the primary scanning station, with image
editing taking place on the more powerful PC of the Imaging workstation.
Images and data can be burned to CD on this station using Roxio Easy CD
Creator.
