Things That Work

On these pages, you will find examples of library programs in your community and beyond that have been successful in reaching out to this new generation of older adults. We hope you will be motivated by what you hear about and that you begin to explore new possibilities at your library and in your community. Feel free to contact NMRLS or the person(s) indicated for additional information.

Chelmsford Public Library
What We Did

Music Trivia Contest

Chelmsford Public Library challenged library users to test their musical knowledge in a music trivia contest called, "Jeopardy of the Jukebox."
What Happened
  • In a Name That Tune fashion, participants were asked 100 questions, using 100 songs.
  • There were five categories: Name That Artist, Name That Composer, Name That Country, Name That Movie, and Name That Tune.
  • All music genres were fair game.
  • All songs were in the Library's collection.
  • After the scores were tallied, the winner received an Apple iPod Shuffle.
  • What We Learned
  • Although this program was not targeted to older "boomer" adults, that's the group that participated.
  • The topic, day of week, and time of day (Sunday afternoon) contributed to this.

    Active Older Adult Fair

For the three consecutive years, the Reading Public Library took part in the local YMCA Active Older Adult Day.
    What Happened
  • In May 2005 and 2006, the Fair was hosted at the Library.
  • There were 25 presenters who staffed tables with handouts and give-aways on health issues, volunteerism, library services and more.
  • The Fair drew 100 older adult participants.
  • Shuttles brought interested attendees to the YMCA for a tour.
  • What We Learned
  • The YMCA/Library collaboration is valuable.
  • The Library was closed the morning of the Fair, but next time all agreed it would be better if the Library were open.

    Over 50 Library Advisory Committee

In February 2005, the J.V. Fletcher Library held its first "Over 50 Library Advisory Committee" meeting.
    What Happened
  • A program idea developed, "Spring Cleaning." The group brought in a speaker to teach people how to use eBay to downsize a home.
  • The program was open to the public but publicized as sponsored by this new advisory committee.
  • What We Learned
  • The Committee members had lots of ideas that the Library would never have considered, e.g., help with downsizing/moving, grandparenting, seeking retirement careers.
  • The Committee continues to provide input on adult programming.
